GALAEI

GALAEI works to cultivate leadership in queer Latin@ communities by empowering and teaching the skills and tools to communities most affected to fight, organize and advocate for themselves. They build collective power and recognize the importance of focused collaboration with other community-based and advocacy organization to build power in communities as well as solidarity between other marginalized/oppressed peoples. Collectively, they work towards social justice as defined as a healthy community free from homo/transphobia, HIV and HIV-related stigma, racism, sexism, poverty, deportation, and incarceration.

YOUTH PROGRAM

The youth program works to support the empowerment of queer latin@ youth through individual coaching, group support, community engagement, and leadership development. Galaei provides a safe and affirming drop-in where youth are coached through various issues relating to sexual health, education, employment, conflict resolution, and trauma. Group activities allow queer latin@ youth to strengthen their social support system and facilitate dialogue about how they can make an impact in their community through organizing. HIV PREVENTION PROGRAM

Galaei provides client-centered, non-judgmental HIV prevention services such as free condoms and lube; free, confidential HIV and STI (sexually transmitted infection) testing, sexual health counseling, same-day linkage to medical care for people diagnosed with HIV; and access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) – the pill that helps prevent HIV. counselors aim to validate individuals’ feelings, calm their fears, and provide a holistic service to ensure people can lead healthy and happy lives, regardless of their HIV status. Contact: Sergio Morales (smorales@galaei.org)

TRANSHEALTH INFORMATION PROJECT (TIP)

TIP provides peer-based support for trans* individuals (trans* encompasses any individual who does not identify as cisgender). the program offers sexual health and HIV prevention counseling, mentorship with transitioning, help with name change, legal advocacy, referrals for housing and food, and opportunities to build community to work towards trans* justice. Contact: Aamina Morrison (aamina@galaei.org)

Prevention Point

Prevention Point Philadelphia is a non-profit, public health organization committed to protecting the health and welfare of drug users and sex workers. PPP works to reduce the harm associated with drug use and sex industry work by offering a safe and humane alternative to the war on drugs. PPP provides a full spectrum of consumer-driven programs to over 10,000 individuals annually through four major programs: the Syringe Exchange Program, the Harm Reduction Services Center, the Street-Side Health Project and the Trans-health Information Project. Students from BMC have volunteered with PPP by providing risk reduction supplies and education at syringe exchange sites.

Action AIDS Friends for Life

ActionAIDS works in partnership with people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS to sustain and enhance their quality of life. The organization provides a range of direct services and takes an active and professional approach to leadership in service, education and advocacy. Volunteers serve as a “buddy” to patients by providing limited practical and emotional support to people living with HIV disease through face-to-face interactions and regular phone calls.

CHOICE Philadelphia

Concern for Health Options: Information, Care, and Education – increases access to accurate information and essential services concerning reproductive, sexual, and family health, empowers people through education and counseling, and provides all of these services with empathy and respect. CHOICE works to overcome and eliminate barriers that impede access to quality health care and information for all individuals – regardless of economic status, gender, age, race, religion, culture, or sexual orientation.

Most of the services delivered by CHOICE (Concern for Health Options: Information, Care, and Education) involve confidential, bilingual (Spanish/English) telephone hotlines staffed by trained, professional counselors. In addition to hotline programs, CHOICE currently offers comprehensive sexual health education in over 180 schools, community centers, social service agencies, churches, and other neighborhood sites throughout Philadelphia. Various opportunities are available for volunteers, such as research in the HIV/AIDS fields and other advocacy work.

Temple University Comprehensive HIV Program

The Temple Comprehensive HIV Program provides multidisciplinary primary and HIV specialty care for over 750 patients. The services include routine and specialized gynecological procedures, prenatal consultative care, nutritional counseling and assessment, case management and access to clinical trials. The program serves traditionally underrepresented minorities and women in a practice setting, fully integrated into the ambulatory medical offices. The Temple Comprehensive HIV Program is also involved in community outreach with presentations to patient groups, AIDS service organizations, medical staff in hospitals and prisons. Volunteers may have opportunities to assist in patient counseling and HIV testing.

Youth Health Empowerment Project (Y-HEP)

The Youth Health Empowerment Project began in an effort to reduce the risks of spreading HIV and STDs among Philadelphia’s young adults. The project has grown to encompassing a range of community-wide health issues, as well as encouraging leadership development among youth. Y-HEP offers volunteer opportunities in the Peer Education Academy. Peer Education Academy strives to mainstream the education it delivers, create networks for youth to access various resources, provide skills for young adults to build upon for future endeavors, and support Philly youth when faced with challenges such as peer pressure and teen pregnancy. Y-HEP is comprehensive adolescent and young adult program that offers holistic health services, sexual health education, drop in day services, and leadership activities to over 3000 high-risk/high promise, low-income, urban youth ages 13-24 living in Philadelphia.

Volunteers at the Youth Health Empowerment Project assist the staff in being able to provide youth with better services while engaging in a unique experience to interact with Y-HEP incredible participants. All volunteers are expected to carry out Y-HEP’s mission to empower young people by maintaining the Y-HEP rights and responsibilities and interacting with the participants as a role model.

Mazzoni Center

The Mazzoni Center is a health care provider that specifically targets the needs and wellness of LGBT individuals located in Philadelphia. In addition to primary health care, Mazzoni supports through providing mental and behavioral health services, LGBT legal services, HIV and STD testing, food bank and housing subsidies for families and individuals affected by HIV, support groups, outreach and education programs.

Volunteers help support the Mazzoni Center by promoting various programs and engaging the public in community-wide events. There are a variety of ways you can help at the Mazzoni Center, such as data entry, social media support, receptionist, and outreach volunteers.

ACLU

Founded in 1920, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is the nation’s foremost guardian of liberty. They are a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to defending and protecting individual rights and personal freedoms.

Through advocacy, education and litigation, their attorneys, advocates and volunteers work to preserve and promote civil liberties including the freedom of speech, the right to privacy, reproductive freedom, and equal treatment under the law. They stand in defense of the rights of women and minorities, workers, students, immigrants, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, and others who have seen bias and bigotry threaten the rights afforded to all of us in this country by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Because the ACLU of Pennsylvania is a nonprofit organization with limited resources, they rely on volunteers and interns to accomplish their work. Most of their volunteer and internship opportunities are in one of their offices in Philadelphia. Some volunteers make a regular weekly commitment to volunteer; others help out on an as-needed basis.

The Philadelphia local chapter is made up of volunteers who help further the mission of the ACLU by alerting staff about civil liberties violations in their area, holding local events, and raising awareness in their communities about civil liberties and the ACLU-PA.

The AIDS pandemic closely follows the fault lines of broader social injustice.
